My Top 5 Non-Fiction Book Recommendations

What comes to mind when you hear the word non-fiction? Was that Beethoven’s 5th Symphony I just heard? Ok, so I get it. Non-fiction isn’t fantasy. As unfortunate as it is, Mr. Darcy can’t sweep us off our feet and in the real world, Count Olaf is actually a murderous maniac who should be locked up forever. I know, I know. A reality wake up call is probably the last thing a reader wants to experience, but bear with me. As much as I love traveling to different worlds through fiction portals, opening a non-fiction book teaches me about my surroundings in the real world. If you haven’t given non-fiction a chance, I highly recommend it. Whether you spend your time with your nose in a biography about Amelia Earhart, a devotional by Jefferson Bethke, or a small travel guide that depicts the small islands off of Honolulu, reading non-fiction is an extremely helpful way to rearrange, rejuvenate, and replenish our thoughts. Especially, when they are edifying, appropriate, and God-honoring. These are my top 5 non-fiction book recommendations.

#5 The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey
If you're familiar with the non-fiction genre, you’ve probably heard of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. While that book has helped many different adults during their oh-so-adult-lives, Sean Covey, son of Stephen Covey, decided to write the same book in a completely diverse way, in order to capture the attention of teenagers, who will one day become adults. I commend him for his awesome idea. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens is a wonderful book which takes the reader along the 7 different success habits, teens should begin to create NOW. Overall, this is a fantastic book and it has already helped me with tips on productivity and successful habits. I highly recommend this book to the teen who strives to be better everyday.

#4 It’s Not What You Think: Why Christianity is About So Much More than Going to Heaven When You Die by Jefferson Bethke

Jefferson Bethke is by far one of my favorite devotional/non-fiction authors. God has gifted him beyond explanation and I am in love with his speaking and writing style. I first came across Jefferson Bethke when His “Spoken Word” videos became popular on Youtube. It didn’t take long for his books to roll out onto the Barnes and Nobles shelves and it was only a short while after that I bought my first book by him, which was...can you guess? Ding ding ding! It’s Not What You Think. When I say he is one of those authors who writes exactly what every Christian is thinking but won’t say, I mean it. It’s Not What You Think is and incredible devotional book, where Bethke explains how Christianity, contrary to popular belief, is not just about rules, laws, and perfection, but is actually the exact opposite because Christianity has nothing to do with us and what we do but Christianity has everything to do with Christ and what He has already done! I recommend this book to literally every Christian because his words are God-given and based on God’s Truth!

#3 Uninvited: Living Loved When You Feel Less Than, Left Out, and Lonely by Lysa Terkeurst
Z88.3 Fan? Proverbs 31 Ministries subscriber? You’ve heard of Lysa Terkeurst then, right? Wow, is the only word that comes to mind when I think of her book Uninvited. Uninvited became one of the top selling Christian books when it first came out. It was all over social media and the internet and I’m not surprised. In this world, and as humans in general, we face all sorts of rejection. Uninvited is a brilliant book that reminds us how wonderfully loved we really are. We are to live loved because we are loved and no matter what anyone says, no matter what type of rejection we face, and no matter how let down we feel, Jesus Christ is always there to pick us up, look us in the eyes and say “I love you and I still want you and I will always love you and I will always want you!” This is such an amazing book and you need to go buy it!

#2 Before You Meet Prince Charming: A Guide to Radiant Purity by Sarah Mally
“A must read for every girl!”-Jana, Jill, Jessa, Jinger and Joy Duggar.
I agree with the Duggar girls! This is a must read for every girl! In today’s world, purity is a thing of the past and very old-fashioned, but honestly it is the wisest way, the most beautiful way, and not to mention God’s way! In this book, Sarah Mally discusses the importance of purity inside and out of marriage, waiting for Prince Charming in a smart and wise way, and knowing that Christ is our all in all whether Prince Charming comes or not, all written in a fun and captivating fashion. Overall, it is a great book and great gift for any girl!

#1 Girl Defined: God’s Design for Beauty, Femininity, and Identity by Kristen Clark and Bethany Baird
If Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is my favorite fiction novel, Girl Defined is definitely my favorite non-fiction book. I CAN NOT EXPLAIN HOW WONDERFUL AND BEAUTIFUL AND ABSOLUTELY AMAZING THIS BOOK IS! Sisters, Kristen Clark and Bethany Baird and their ministry Girl Defined is one of the best ministries for young girls or any woman in general. Their explanations about how modesty, femininity, sex, love, romance, relationships, and our feminine nature as God has created us, is wonderful! Literally, you have to read this book for yourself in order to take in the beauty of it. If you do not read any of the books listed in this post you HAVE to read this one! Check out their website, social media and Youtube channel for more info as well!
